Thank you Jan and Pamela for sharing your stories with me, I am grateful you took the time to do that. There was certainly not any kind of NICU available back in that era. I was in an incubated with full O2 on and they learned later that could damage an infant's eyes... thus I am legally blind in one eye and the other can be corrected with glasses. I am amazed of this strange turn of events that led me to your mom, thank you again.

Thank you for sharing, Cindy. It's so interesting you were born at Hotel Dieu and were a preemie. I am Winnie's first daughter, I was born in El Paso in 1954, and I am also a 6 week preemie!
I was born at the Air Base hospital because Ft. Bliss's army hospital closed the nursery temporarily because of an infection or virus. We are blessed to be survivors of early arrivals in the 50's when neonatal units barely existed.

Thank you for your message Cindy and sharing your story. It may in fact be that our Mom cared for your mother and you at Hotel Dieu. Our father was stationed in El Paso as well. There are a few mentions of Hotel Dieu online—here is one: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.elpasotimes.com/amp/3845855002
It was demolished in 2003. Thanks for sharing your shared history.

I'm sorry for your loss and send you my sincere condolences. As I was reading her obituary in the local paper I came across something very surprising. It stated that Winnie was a nurse at Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso. I was born there in 1953, I was a 3#7oz. preemie. My family is from Cloquet, my dad was at guard school there and my mom took the train down to see him. Had me that night, 6 weeks early. Perhaps Winnie was my nurse? I've tried to see if the hospital still exists but have found nothing. I hope you don't mind me reaching out here, Cindy Lyes

Very sorry for your loss. Winnie was a very nice person and she was my neighbor all through our school years. As young little kids we always played over at her house.I did not see much of Winnie after she married.Later in life my wife Barbara met Winnie and was very pleased meeting her. Thoughts and prayers to the Gustafson Family. I am actually from the 1950 class of Proctor. Since Don was the President of our class we benefited from Winnie's talents. After Don was gone Winnie would get together with our committee and help us plan for our class reunions. 2020 was the first year we didn't have a reunion but Winnie and I still had a phone visit about our class. I will miss talking with Winnie. Phyllis Jensen

Carla, Pamela, Ken, Jan, and Gustafson family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. Your mother was a special person and a role model as a nurse who was interested in youth. I remember times with your family where your mom always posed good questions and conveyed thoughtful concern for those she encountered. She will be missed.
May the Lord comfort you and bind your hearts. God bless you!
With heartfelt sympathy,
Renee and Tom Kumpula
