Obituary of Karen Joy Soukkala

Karen Joy Soukkala, 79 of New London, MN died Sunday, December 6, 2020 in her home. Karen died as a result of congestive heart failure. She was born in Cloquet, MN to Arthur and Helen Soukkala on March 25, 1941. Karen lived on a farm with her family in Sawyer where she attended school until the 6th grade, then Carlton school until age 15 when her mother married Richard Michaelson from Esko, MN where Karen graduated high school with honors in 1958. Karen loved the farm and would take care of the cows when her mother and stepfather went on vacations. She married Richard Anderson in 1959. To this union three sons were born. They made their home near Carlton until moving to Idaho in the 60s where they lived for 3+ years. Upon returning to Minnesota, Karen began working for the State of MN in human services, first in Moose Lake where her sons lived until they graduated from high school. She was able to advance in her career through job training and special classes at UMD & Willmar Community College. In 1987 Karen transferred to Willmar Regional Treatment Center to work as a chemical dependency counselor. In 1996, she bought a home in New London where she enjoyed gardening, baking, and taking care of her home. Another hobby was wreath making. Karen went north in October to cut balsam boughs and to gather ground pine with her sister, Doris, taking breaks to visit brothers and other relatives, also having tailgate lunches in the warm fall air. Then, she would have wreath parties in her garage basement workshop and would give her wreaths to family and friends. Karen especially liked having company from up north and her sons and families. Karen loved the outdoors, biking on the trail right behind her home, also cross-country skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, and swimming. Son, Les said her home was a Finlander heaven, including a sauna in the basement. Karen retired from the State of MN in 2000. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Kenneth and Einar Soukkala, one grandson, Cassius; sister, Doris; and niece, Penny. Karen is survived by her sons, Craig, Les, and Joel (Theresa) Anderson; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; her brothers, Jerry (Diane) Soukkala, Dale Soukkala and Arthur Soukkala; and many nieces and nephews. Nephew, Trent was Karen's 40th birthday present given to her by sister-in-law, Shirley Soukkala and brother, Dale. Karen loved celebrating with her friends and family. She created many fond memories that will live on in the hearts of many forever.
