I can't think of Don without thinking of Norma as well. They were like one to me, and I don't remember ever seeing one without the other. It was never just Don and never only Norma, but always DonandNorma. So maybe DoNo?
I always enjoyed spending time with Don, Norma and the kids, and looked forward to the occasions when I stayed with them while my parents travelled. Partly because when I stayed with Smith's it was, inevitably, haying season. (I sometimes thought that their haying schedule was irrespective of the time of year, but rather organized around my visits.)
There was something different about Don and Norma--they never seemed old, or maybe more accurately, they never treated me like I was just a kid, which made seem younger. As a relatively new member of the family with a tumultuous childhood, that meant a lot to me. As a result, I always enjoyed their company--even as a kid, which is a bit unique and special, I think.
Much was said about Don's sense of humor, as it was clearly a distinguishing trait. And as dry and understated as it was, you could almost mistake him for a Maki. I found that when Don spoke, you had to pay close attention, because he might be saying something very clever and amusing, but easy to miss because of its subtlety. It was the same kind of humor I heard from my mom, and from Franklin, Norma, Aggie et al, I often thought that might be true of Finns in general. I looked for it a few years ago when we visited Finland, but it was hard to tell since they were all speaking Finnish.
So thank you, Don, for being forever young, for making all of us smile, and for fifty years of being a perfectly matched set with one of my favorite people. I will miss you,
Bill Aho

I have so many wonderful memories at the house on Reservation Road! I spent many nights there! Me and Anna built forts, picked lots of blueberries, caught lots of fireflies, played games for hours, played on the giant teeter totter, and giggled and laughed a lot! Uncle Don had to maybe tell us a time or to to be quiet and go to sleep! You will be greatly missed Uncle Don.

I was so sorry to learn about Donnie's death. We met the Haro's around 1944 when they became our neighbors on Swede Lake Road. My brother Donnie and Donnie were playmates while Beatrice and I were friends. We found out we had birthdays close together, me on June 12, Donnie June 13 and my brother Donnie June 14. We spent many hours swimming at Bean Dam in the summertime. So many years have passed but I remember those childhood days most fondly. The Haro's were very nice neighbors.
My deepest sympathy to you Norma and all your family.
