Obituary of Lilly Emelia Autio

Lilly Emelia Autio,100 years,11 months,16 days died in Duluth Saturday, October 16, 2021. She was born November 1,1920 in Jersey City, NJ to Betty and Ivar Mattila. She attended and graduated from Floodwood High School. Lilly married Melvin Autio in Duluth and eventually settled in their hometown of Floodwood, MN. 

She was active in community volunteering, served as city treasurer and was a long-time member of Hope Lutheran Church. Lilly was a seamstress and loved the art of hand sewing. Each of her children and grandchildren treasure the quilts she made for them. After taking many domestic vacations she and Melvin made the trip of a lifetime to visit family in Finland. Her love and caring of family were her goal and greatest legacy.

Preceding her in death in 2003 was her husband of 63 years, Melvin; parents; sister, Bertha; brothers, John, Wilho, and Donald; granddaughters, Melissa Autio, Brooke Rosemore; and step grandson Scott Patterson.

Survivors include sons, Dick (Patty), Ralph (Sheila); daughter, Pat (Jerry) Bruno; sisters, Elsie Tollgaard and Elvi Tollgaard; grandchildren, Lance (Julie), Shari (Dean), Robyn (Darren), Holly (Brian), Michelle, Ross (Liz), Cory (Sara), Chris (Beth), Ashley (Eric); great-grandchildren, Alex (Kristi), Zachary (Nicole), Alea (Tony), Brenna (Tyler), Brittany (Riley), Amanda, Ricky, Kelsey, Nichole (Greg),  Samantha (Eric), Chelsea (Cole), Jacob, Mitch, Emily, Jared, Kiah (Anthony), Peyton, Jaxon, Freija; great-great grandchildren, Owen, Sylis, Sydney, Maddie, Gamble, Paxtyn, Blair, Ashlynn, Aliyah, Jessica, Peyton, Autumn, Aiden, Ava, Nova, and Theodore; and many nieces, nephews, and Finnish cousins.

A special thank you to the staff of Riverview Manor, Scenic Rivers Health Service, Viewcrest Health Care Center, Essentia Hospice Program, Big Stone Therapies and Compassion Care for their great care. Memorials preferred to a charity of your choice.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Floodwood. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Forest Hill Van Buren Cemetery after the service. Masks are required inside the church.
