Obituary of Edwin Floyd Carlson

Edwin Floyd Carlson, 85, Barnum, died Monday, July 22, 2002 in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. He was born in Two Harbors, Minnesota on February 17, 1917 to George and Anna (Mattson) Carlson. His family moved to Blackhoof Township soon after his birth. He served with the Army military police during WWII. After his service duty, he worked as a machinist in Rockford, IL. Ed married Gloria Elaine Miller on August 13, 1949 in Rockford, IL. They lived in Rockford from 1949 to 1955 when they moved back to Blackhoof where Ed farmed until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the American Swedish Institute, American Legion Post #415 in Barnum, served on the Blackhoof Volunteer Fire Department for 36 years, attended Sandy Lake Baptist Church and served as a State Fire Warden for more than 40 years. Ed enjoyed fishing, listening to music, playing cards especially cribbage, gardening, telling stories and having coffee in town with his coffee buddies. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria; his parents; and three sisters, Ardell Peterson, Lorraine Kumala and Ruth Carlson. Ed is survived by his children, Larry (Linda) Carlson of Roseville, Kenny (Barb Anderson) Carlson of Barnum, Cindi (Tim) Grimm of Ely and Russ (Kim) Carlson of Barnum; one sister, Violet Olson of Duluth; two brothers, Evert (Juanita) Carlson of Belvidere, IL and Ruben (Dottie) Carlson of Elwood, IN; seven grandchildren, Jacob and Wesley Grimm, Michael and Matthew Carlson, Eric Bodin, Elizabeth and Izabell Carlson; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 25, 2002 in Sandy Lake Baptist Church, Blackhoof Township. Interment was in Sandy Lake Cemetery.
