Obituary of John Henry Kulas

John H. Kulas, 91 of Carlton, formerly of Esko and Buyck, died on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 in the Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet with his family by his side. He was born January 2, 1911 in Buyck, MN to Sam and Sophie (Wenk) Kulas. John was a pioneer farmer of the Buyck area. He worked for the Virginia Rainey Lake Lumber Co. at age 14, the CCC Camps of Cusson, MN, for the St. Louis County Road Dept., and was also a logger. He married Sophie Wozniak on September 14, 1948 in Cook. He retired from the DW&P Railroad Maintenance Dept. in 1976. His fondest moments were on his Oliver tractor tending his farm in Buyck. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Buyck and St. Francis Catholic Church in Carlton. John was well known for his dedication and compassion toward his family and friends. He never forgot a name and was always willing to lend a hand or a listening ear in any time of need. All who knew him will always remember John's stories, warm heart, and hard work ethic. John was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Sophie; his brother, Valentine; sister, Bernice Marcus; half-sister, Alice Bertsick; half-brother, Albert; and great-grandson, Travis Hester. John is survived by his son, John J. (Sandy) of Esko and his daughter, Barbara (Charles) Oakley of Goldsboro, North Carolina; his brother, Frank (Theresa) Kulas of Chicago: his sister, Ann Johnson of Chicago; grandchildren Timothy and Andrew (Sara) Kulas of Cloquet, James (Brenda) Hester of Esko, Robert (Kristine) Hester of Tampa, Florida, Kay (Matt) Ames and Kristine Oakley of Goldsboro, and 14 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2002 in St. Francis Catholic Church, Carlton. Spring interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Buyck.
