Obituary of Shirley Irene Johnson

Shirley Irene (Ollila) Johnson of Floodwood passed away on April 6, 2004 in Lake Haven Manor in Duluth. She was born in Cloquet on June 25, 1923 to Jacob and Melita (Penttila) Ollila. Shirley married John M. Johnson on September 2, 1944 in a double ceremony with John's sister, Eileen to Halgar Sparring. Shirley was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and in charge of their annual fall bazaar wreath making. Shirley and Mayme Kantola sang duets in Finnish and in English for over 30 years for many special occasions. She was a long time member of the Halden Women's Club and served on the Halden Town board. She loved to bake, cook, garden and have her flowers. She sent no one away without coffee and some sort of coffee leipaa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 56 years, John on October 3, 2000 and one brother, Edward Ollila. Shirley is survived by her three children, Leland Johnson of Floodwood, Lynette Tillman (Mike Peterson) of Floodwood and Gaylene (Richard) Walsh of Twig; four grandsons, Michael (Shirley) Tillman of Barnum, Shawn (Lori) Tillman of Duluth, Ryan Walsh (Angela Michelizzi) of Proctor and Kyle Walsh of Twig; two great grandsons, Shane Tillman and Antonio Walsh Michelizzi; a sister, Ethel Skarp of Cloquet; a brother, Harold Ollila of Helena, Montana and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Friday, April 9, 2004 in Hope Lutheran Church, Floodwood. Interment was in Hope Lutheran Cemetery. If preferred, memorials may be made to the Hope Lutheran Church Accessibility Fund. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet.
