Obituary of Earl Frederick Skarp

Earl Skarp, 83, of Cloquet, died peacefully in his home, with his family by his side, Tuesday, October 29, 2002. He was born to Herman and Lydia (Oman) Skarp on March 2, 1919 in the Northeastern Hotel, Cloquet, which served as the hospital after the 1918 Cloquet Fire. Earl graduated from Esko High School in 1936. He was among the first draft out of Cloquet in 1941 and served five years in the Army during World War II. Earl married Ethel Ollila on May 28,1949 in Thomson, MN. He worked as a foreman at the Wood Conversion/Conwed for 40 years until retiring in 1981. Earl was preceded in death by his son, Mickey Earl Skarp and a granddaughter, Angel Maria Laveau. Earl is survived by his wife Ethel, Cloquet; daughters, Erlana (James) Biskey of Fredenberg Township, Duluth and Bonita "Bonnie" Peterson of Barnum; grandchildren Jeremy (Amy) Laveau, Chad (Angela) Laveau, Tessie (Eric) Lindgren, Tony (Joanie) Laveau, BreeAnna Laveau, Timothy Peterson and Jill Peterson; step-grandchildren, James "Joe" (Colleen) Biskey, Becky (Randy) Pfab, Sharon Biskey and Harold Biskey; 13 great-grandchildren and step-granchildren; and his sister, Liita Crotteau. A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, October 31, 2002, 1:00 p.m. in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Esko, with Reverend Jeffrey Walther officiating. Inurment was in St. Matthew's Cemetery, Esko. Arrangements with Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.
