Obituary of Elsie Margaret Carlson

Elsie Margaret Carlson, 83, formerly of Cromwell, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. She was born April 20, 1919 in Kalevala Township, the daughter of John and Heta (Walitalo) Aho. Elsie grew up west of Mahtowa in the Beehive Community and attended the Beehive School and graduated from Barnum High School in 1937. She worked as a maid in Duluth from 1938 - 1942 and then worked at the Mahtowa Co-op from 1943 - 1949. After her marriage to Carl Emil Carlson on December 26, 1949 in Mahtowa, Elsie was a homemaker. Elsie was a member of Eagle Lake Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church. She especially loved the time she spent with her grandchildren. Elsie was an avid baseball fan, enjoyed playing scrabble and when she was younger, was an avid bowler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl and several siblings. Elsie is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Duane) Schmidt of Cromwell; her son, Allen (Betty) Carlson of Mahtowa; six grandchildren, Rebekah, Courtney, Jacob and Benjamin Schmidt and Todd and Nick Carlson; two great grandchildren, Brant and Sydney; four brothers, Ray (Eleanor) Aho of Cloquet, Walter (Sue) Aho of the Twin Cities, Archie (Iris) Aho of TX and Melvin Aho of Barnum; three sisters, Hetty Korpela of Cromwell, Helen Aho of Duluth and Lillian Kaufman of Superior; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 5, 2003 in Eagle Lake Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church. Spring burial will be in Mt. Salem Cemetery, Mahtowa. If preferred, memorials may be made to Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
