Obituary of Carl Edwin Johnson

Carl E. Johnson, age 88 of Carlton, passed away on Monday, January 19, 2004 at the Interfaith Care Center in Carlton. He was born on September 9, 1915 in East Lake, Minnesota to Axel and Betty (Larson) Johnson. Carl farmed in his younger years, and while farming he worked at the Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge from 1946 to 1956. He moved to Carlton and worked as a mechanic for the Diamond Match Co. until retiring in 1977. He and Edna moved to Partridge Lake near Deerwood where he was instrumental in establishing Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Garrison. For 20 years he and Edna traveled to the Rat Lake Barn in McGregor to play with the Lowell Larson Trio. Carl was also very proud of his military service during WWII. He served as a Staff Sergeant with the 8th Air Force in England. Carl was a member of the Carlton/Garrison V.F.W. Carl is preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and John; and two grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Edna; two sons, Norman (Karen) and Dennis both of Carlton; two daughters, Carla (George) Demers of St. Peter and Colleen (Dennis) Bannow of Dowagiac, MI; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; three brothers, Albin (Edna) of Carlton, Willard (Lucille) of Ham Lake and Elmer (Evelyn) of Osceola, WI; two sisters, Esther Swedberg of Mpls. and Margaret (Vincent) Sherman of Palisade. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 24, 2004 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Spring interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Carlton. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home of Cloquet, Minnesota.
