Obituary of Hetty Elizabeth Korpela

Hetty Elizabeth Korpela, 86 of Cromwell died Thursday, June 12, 2003 in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. She was born December 26, 1916 in Kalevala Township to John and Heta (Walitalo) Aho. Hetty grew up in Mahtowa and attended elementary school at the Beehive School. In order for her to attend high school, she lived with her aunt in Kettle River. She graduated from Barnum High School in 1933 at the age of 16. Hetty married Arthur Korpela on October 23, 1935 in Kettle River. They lived in Duluth and in 1943 they moved to Cromwell where they farmed. Hetty was a member of the Eagle Lake Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church in Cromwell. She was an accomplished seamstress. Hetty enjoyed fishing, camping, reading, and traveling, making trips to Finland and Alaska. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur on March 4, 1997; brothers, Fred, Matt and Robert Aho; sisters, Elsie Carlson, Mildred Lundin and Dorothy Weaver; son-in-law, Donald Heikkila; great grandsons, Luke Calverley and Thomas Heino III. She is survived by her daughters, Marlene Heikkila of Hoyt Lakes, Carol (James) Videen of Esko, Jean (Robert) Saari of Cromwell, Diane (Donald) Calverley of Barnum, Linda (Gary) Larson of Cromwell and Faye (Dennis) Hurst of Barnum; one son, Larry (Jane) Korpela of Ramsey; brothers, Raymond (Eleanor) Aho of Cloquet, Walter (Susan) Aho of White Bear Lake, Archie (Iris) Aho of Summersville, Texas; Melvin Aho of Barnum; sisters, Helen Aho of Duluth and Lillian Kaufman of Superior; 19 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2003 in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St. in Cloquet. Visitation will continue from 10 until the 11:00 a.m. service Monday, June 16, 2003 in Eagle Lake Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church in Cromwell. Burial will be in Eagle Lake Cemetery.
