Obituary of Mayme Lumppio

Mayme "Mae" Westervik Lumppio, 87, Cloquet, died Wednesday, September 24, 2003 in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. She was born June 26, 1916 in Cloquet, the daughter of Herman and Hilja Westervik. She attended the Cloquet Public Schools and graduated from Cloquet High School in 1934 as a member of the National Honor Society. Mae married Archie Lumppio on June 26, 1936 and lived in Cloquet all of her life except for six years during WWII when she lived in Minneapolis. She was her husband's secretary for over 20 years in his insurance office. Mae loved music and art and was an ardent fisherman. In her younger days she led a women's choral group. She belonged to the Northland Arts and Crafts Guild for many years and took part in their art and craft fairs and her plaques were sold in Ironworld Gift Shop for many years. Mae was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Esko Senior Citizens, Finlandia Club, AARP and was a member of Suomi Club for many years. She was very interested in her ethnic roots and wrote three books, one was "Customs, Folklore and History of Finland in the Olden Days", "Potpourri from a Finnish Grandmother" and a book of three family trees. She translated three Finnish books for her references. Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Archie. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Lee) Hartmann of Bradenton, FL; her son, James (Carol) Lumppio of Eden Prairie; her sister, Thelma (John) Pechek of Bovey, MN; seven grandchildren, Debra, David, Lori, Diane, Thomas, Tracy and Melissa; eight great grandchildren, John Patrick, Brendan, Jeffrey, Drew, Emma, Hannah, Faith and Cristina. A funeral service was held on Saturday, September 27, 2003 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery in Cloquet. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet.
