Obituary of James Edward Cooper

James Edward Cooper, 82, of Cloquet, died in his home after a six month battle with cancer. He was born in 1927 in Beatrice, Nebraska to Fred and Elsie Cooper. Jim served in the Navy during World War II. He lived in Clark, SD for a number of years and moved to this area in the late 60's. Jim and Delores Flake were married on March 23, 1968 in Cloquet. He worked as a pipeline welder for Northern Natural Gas Company, retiring after 32 years. Following his retirement for 20 years he and Delores spent their winters in Mission, Texas at Dream Valley Ranch. As a young man, Jim enjoyed boxing. He was a lifetime member of Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 in Carlton and Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262 in Cloquet. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Betty Cooper; his daughter, Diane Terwey; granddaughter, Shawn Terwey; great-great granddaughter, Aalysia Terwey; son-in-law, Ringo Salm; and a brother, Teddy Cooper. Jim is survived by his wife, Delores, of Cloquet; son, Mike (DiAnn) Cooper of Mission, TX; three daughters, Patti Salm of Little Chute, WI, Twyla Menart of Cloquet and Denise (Curt) Anderson of Esko; a son-in-law, Dennis Terwey of Hutchinson, KS; one brother, Donald (Shirley) Cooper of Mission, TX; nine grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Memorial Services were held on Friday, October 16, 2009 in Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet, followed by a luncheon in the Fireside Room of the funeral home. Military honors were accorded by the Carlton Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospice or Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962, Carlton.
