Obituary of Helen Mae Hughes

Helen Mae Hughes, 91 of Cloquet, formerly of Duluth, died Wednesday, December 24, 2003 in Community Memorial Nursing Home in Cloquet. She was born May 11, 1912 in Duluth to Stanley and Genevieve (Lewandowski) Matuzak. On December 7, 1936, Helen married Gerald Hughes and they made their home in Duluth. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church until 1978 when she moved to Cloquet. She was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and had been active in the church circles, Foresters and the Eagles Auxiliary. Helen enjoyed camping and fishing, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family. The family would like to thank the staff at the Community Memorial Nursing Home in Cloquet for the warm and compassionate care they gave to Helen. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald in 1991; and five brothers, Tony, Clarence, Raymond, Stanley Jr., and Richard Matuzak. She is survived by her son, Ronald (Bernice) Hughes of Duluth; daughters, Claudia Wilhelm of Duluth and Judy (Dennis) Mattinen of Esko; brothers, Len (Irene) Matuszak and John Matuzak both of Cloquet; 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 great great granddaughter. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, December 29, 2003 in Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet.
