Obituary of Gene M. Cary

Gene "Woodchuck" M. Cary, 76 of Cloquet died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 in his home. He was born July 1, 1928 in Cloquet to Glen and Helen (Rogentine) Cary. Gene graduated from Cloquet High School in 1946. He was an Army Veteran serving during WWII with the 511th Parachute Regiment. After the war, Gene returned to Cloquet where he worked at Northwest Paper Company for a short time. During the 1950's he worked for MP&L. He also drove oil truck for Erickson Oil. During the 1960's and 70's he was an Insurance Agent until retiring in 1978. After his retirement, Gene managed and tended bar at the VFW. He also tended bar at the Eagles Club, Stage Stop and the Golden Gate. He was a member of the VFW Post 3979 and a lifetime member of the Eagles where he was the president in 1978 and the secretary for many years. Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, and doing crossword puzzles. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Myrtle; and son, Glen. He is survived by one son, Mike (Colleen Lawrence) Cary of Cloquet; four grandchildren, Nate, Zack, Carly, and Justin; sister, Glena Lee (Richard) Bennett of Proctor; and four nephews. Gene is also survived by his extended family; his loving companion of 20 years, Betty Ann; and her children, Rose, Steve, Mike, and Rick; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 16, 2004 in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St. in Cloquet. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11. Military Honors will be accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. A time of fellowship and lunch will follow in the Fireside Room of the funeral home.
