Obituary of Bernice M. Makila

Bernice M. Makila, 74, Duluth, died Wednesday, January 15, 2003 in St. Luke's Hospice surrounded by her family. She was born February 24, 1928 in Cromwell, the daughter of Edward and Saima (Markala) Huhta. Bernice was employed by Cascade Lodge in Grand Marais from 1978 - 1991. She enjoyed being a part of the Lakeland Shores Community. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Eino J. Makila in 1991; and five brothers, Charles, Kenneth, John, Wayne and Tony Huhta. Bernice is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Makila of Duluth and Mavis (LeRoy) Johnson of Gilbert, AZ; her son, Keith (Lisa) Makila of Minneapolis; four grandchildren, Kevin and Ryan Johnson, and Zoe and Finn Makila; a brother, Eugene (Shirley) Huhta of Cloquet; two sisters, Dorothy (Howard) Saari of Esko and Signe (Jim) Hill of El Cajon, CA; sisters-in-law, Alice Martwig and Taimi Korpi, both of Deer River, Ellen Mikkola of Cromwell, Ailie Huhta and Helen Huhta, both of Duluth and Evelyn Huhta of Cloquet and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Saturday, January 18, 2003 in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet followed by refreshments in the Fireside Room of the funeral home.
