Obituary of Hjalmer W. Hakala

Hjalmer W. Hakala, 98, of Cromwell passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2003 in Villa Vista Nursing Home. He was born August 24, 1904 in Skelton Township to John and Sophie (Rantala) Hakala. He married Hilma Parviainen on June 21, 1935. They farmed together in Skelton township. During the 1950's and 1960's they lived in California before returning to Minnesota. They made their home in the Cromwell area and continued farming. Hilma preceded Hjalmer in death in 1990. Hjalmer moved to the Villa Vista in October 1997. Hjalmer enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. In addition to his wife, Hjalmer was preceded in death by four brothers, Axel, John, William and Jacob; three sisters, Elena Ojanpera, Hilda Juutilainen and Jennie Mackey. He is survived by his nephews, George Mackey, Wilbert (Elaine) Mackey, Lester Mackey, and William Juutilainen all of Barnum; niece, Arlyne (Kal) Kokkonen of Cloquet; and many second, third and fourth generation nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 9, 2003 in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St.in Cloquet. Burial was in Mount Salem Cemetery in Mahtowa. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet.
