Obituary of Carl Victor Gilberg

Carl Victor Gilberg, 83 of Duluth died Sunday, March 16, 2003 in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born March 16, 1920 in Duluth to Victor and Lillian (Newman) Gilberg. Carl attended Smith - Hughes School in Duluth where he studied to be a machinist and welder. During the 1930's and 1940's he worked for U.S. Steel in Duluth. Carl married Laura Strand on June 7, 1940 in Duluth. Together they raised 4 children. He served in the Navy from 1942 until 1945. After the War, Carl returned to Duluth and worked for U.S. Steel until 1951 at which time he went to work as a brakeman for the Northern Pacific Railroad and later the Burlington Northern Railroad. He owned and operated a roller rink and grocery store in Mahtowa from 1962 until 1978. He retired in 1979. He was a lifelong member of Bethany Baptist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir and performing solos. Carl was a member of the United Trainman Union and N.A.R.V.E. Carl enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing church softball and he loved to fish. Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Laura on February 14, 1991. He is survived by his four children, David (Nancy) Gilberg of Cloquet, Barbara Rozell of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Roger (Jackie) of North Richland Hills, Texas and John Gilberg of Ponca City, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Andy and Joey Hatcher, Jenny and Molly Gilberg and Joshua and Ryan Gilberg; one great grandson, Noah Hatcher, and his special friend, Jean Davidson of Duluth. Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 20, 2003 in Bethany Baptist Church, 6700 Grand Avenue in Duluth. Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet.
