Obituary of Tyyne Parviainen Johnson

Tyyne Parviainen Johnson, 85 of Mahtowa, passed away peacefully at the Villa Vista Nursing Home in Cromwell on Saturday, October 18, 2003. She was born February 28, 1918 in Cromwell to Matti and Eeva Parviainen. She attended her first seven grades at the old Parviainen School in Eagle Township and later graduated from Cromwell High School. She then moved to San Francisco where she met and married her husband, Albert I. Johnson. She was married on May 26, 1942 and moved back to the Mahtowa area in 1946 where they farmed for about thirty years. In addition to farming, Tyyne worked at the Barnum Co-op and later for General Andrews Tree Farm. She was always active in the community including Salem Lutheran Sewing Sisters, Barnum Band Mothers, and was the co-founder of the Bee Hive 4H, which in its time was one of the most active and successful 4H clubs in Carlton County. Her favorite organization was the Bee Hive Community Club located in the old school house six miles west of Mahtowa. She was the last active charter member of the club that was formed in 1949. Tyyne and Al donated the property to the community when the club was formed. The Bee Hive is still active today. Tyyne was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers and five sisters; her husband; and two grandsons. She is survived by her four children, Albert (Gail) Johnson, Marilyn (Ralph) Pehl, Rodney (Karen) Johnson and Bruce (Susan) Johnson; ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren; one sister, Hilja Eaton; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, October 22, 2003 in Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet. Burial was in Eagle Lake Cemetery in Eagle Township. In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial contributions be made to the Bee Hive Community Club.
