Obituary of Dick Halland

Dick Halland, 66, of Duluth, formerly of Cloquet, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 in St. Luke's Hospice Unit from complications following surgery. Dick was born on July 5, 1938 in Albert Lea, MN. His parents, Ted and Loraine Halland took him home to Northwood, Iowa. He graduated from Northwood High School, attended St. Olaf College and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa. He did graduate work at the University of Iowa and received a certification in Physical Therapy. Dick worked as a therapist in Iowa and Michigan before moving to Cloquet. He also taught Physical Therapy classes for St. Scholastica. In 1979 he became the safety director for Ulland Bros. Construction Company where he worked until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cloquet and served as an usher. Dick was a member and past master of Dalles Lodge #181. He enjoyed reading mysteries, solving crossword, jumble and cryptoquip puzzles, days at Island Lake, dinner at Chef Yee's, vacationing in Cozumel and being with his family. Dick is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barb; daughters, Renee (Ross) Milberger and Ann (Michael Bernier) Halland; his son, Jeff; and his dearly loved grandchildren, Adam, Ashley and Amanda Milberger. Also surviving are his sister, Dianne (Hal) Johnson of Northwood, Iowa; brother, David (Mary) Halland of Spirit Lake, Iowa; mother-in-law, Arcley Johnson of Northwood, Iowa; sister-in-law, Mary Warren of Sylmar, Calif.; brother-in-law, John Stanek of Fond du Lac, Wisc.; and several nieces, nephews and their families. Memorial service: 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 12, 2004 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cloquet with visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street in Cloquet.
