Obituary of Harriet E. Steigerwald

Harriet E. (Erwin) Steigerwald, 86, of Cloquet died Friday, January 9, 2004 in the Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. She was born in Duluth on June 1, 1917 to Claude and Mildred (Clarke) Erwin. Harriet graduated from Cloquet High School in 1934 and moved shortly after graduation to Chicago, Illinois to attend nursing school at Michael Reese Hospital. She married Charles "Stagg" Steigerwald in Chicago in 1945 and together they had two children. Harriet retired from A.H. Robbins Pharmaceuticals in 1980 and moved back to Cloquet where she lived at Big Lake, Minnesota for 20 years until she moved to Spring Lake Road in Cloquet. In March of 2001, she entered the Inter-Faith Care Center. Harriet and her husband Charles were founding members of the North Shore Association for Retarded Citizens, one of the first such organizations for the mentally and physically handicapped in the country. After moving back to Minnesota, Harriet continued to support the handicapped with her involvement with Pinewoods in Coquet. As a current member, Chuck is still employed at Pinewood and takes part in their work and social programs. Harriet was preceded in death by: her husband, Charles Alexander Steigerwald. She is survived by two sons Charles "Chuck" Steigerwald of Carlton and Clarke (Kate) Steigerwald of Springfield, Illinois. In addition, Harriet had four grandchildren and six great grandchildren; Granddaughter-Renee (Steigerwald) Kelch, who with her husband, Bob, provided Harriet with four great grandchildren, Tyler, Paige, Madison, and Kendall, of Bloomington, Illinois; Grandaughter-Tracy (Steigerwald) Burke and her husband, Pat, who provide Harriet with two great grandchildren, Abigail, and Zachary, also of Bloomington, Illinois; Grandson-Scott Clarke Steigerwald of Chicago, Illinois; Grandson-Brian Steigerwald and his wife April, also of Bloomington, Illinois. Funeral services were held in Illinois. Memorial contributions may be made to Pinewood-Cloquet Inc., 915 18th St., Cloquet, MN 55720.
