Obituary of Helen E. Walters

Helen E. (Olson) Walters, 93, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at the Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. She was born on January 7, 1911 in Crookston to Elling and Helen Olson. Living most of her life in Scanlon, she graduated from Cloquet High School in 1928. After high school, she went to Minneapolis and attended nursing school at the Eitel Hospital, graduating with an R.N. degree but because of the depression was unable to find a nursing job so she returned to Scanlon and went to work at the paper mill. She married Verner "Jumbo" Walters on June 23, 1934. She was a longtime member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet, singing in the choir and holding many offices. She also experienced the 1918 Cloquet Fire riding in a boxcar to Superior. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elling and Helen Olson; her husband, Verner; brother, Chase; sisters, Hazel (Smokey) Canfield and Christine (Frank) Wehrmeister; and son, LeeRoy Walters. She is survived by her children, Shirley (Harry) Berg of Cloquet, Sheila (Howie) Wilkinson of Silver Bay and Craig Walters of Superior; nine grandchildren, Andy (Jackie) Berg, Kris (Jeff) Bloom, Donna (Brian) House, Tim Wilkinson, Tom Wilkinson, Jodi (Scott) Patten, David (Barb) Walters, Roxanne Gondek, and Tanya (Ryan) Templer; 16 great-grandchildren; niece, Susie DeWitt; and nephews, Tom and Jerry Canfield. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 2, 2004 in Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Cloquet. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Inter-Faith Care Center or Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
