Obituary of Thomas Haagen Olsen

Thomas Haagen Olsen, 66 of Carlton, died Monday, September 16, 2002 in Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. He was born June 27, 1936 in Duluth to Thorwald and Borghild (Holten) Olsen. Tom graduated from Barnum High School in 1955. He married Janice Anderson on November 15, 1957. Tom was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet. He worked at Wood Conversion from 1955-1966. In March, 1966 he began working at the Carlton County Courthouse in the maintenance department and advanced to building superintendent until his retirement in 1995. He helped to organize the Carlton County Gem & Mineral Club in 1969 and was Show Chairman of Agate Days for 20 years. Tom was Cub Master for Carlton Pack 177 for several years in the 1970's. He loved picking agates, fishing, bowling, hunting, and spending time in the woods logging for firewood and lumber. Tom retired from the Twin Lakes Town Board in March of 2001, having served for 24 years. He also served on the Carlton County Township Association as treasurer, and on the Carlton Kayak Committee. He was preceded in death by his father in 1972. Tom is survived by his wife, Jan, of Carlton; a son, Lee (Kim) Olsen of Carlton; two daughters, Lynn Olsen Brown of Glenwood, MN and Kris (Paul) Gillund of Long Lake, MN; five grandchildren, Stephanie and Samuel Olsen of Carlton, Jason Brown of Glenwood and Jack and Ben Gillund of Long Lake; his mother, Borghild Olsen of Moose Lake; sisters, Jean (Butch) Gifford of Brady, MT and Betty (Don) Jones of Reno, NV; brothers, Richard (Gladys) of Cloquet, Harry (Bev) of Barnum, Bill (Darlene) of Havre, MT; and his half-brother, Larry (Deb) Knutson of Prairie du Chien, WI; an uncle, Clarence (Evelyn) Olsen; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 19, 2002 in Zion Lutheran Church, 1000 Washington Ave., Cloquet. Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cloquet. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.
