Obituary of Tyne Kristina Heikkinen

Tyne Hakala Heikkinen, 91, of Grand Rapids died September 9, 2002. She was born September 20, 1910 in Wawina to Erick and Kaisa Liisa (Nuorala) Hakala. She married Glen Heikkinen on January 1, 1933. Tyne taught school in the Grand Rapids area and raised a family in Wawina. Tyne and Glen lived in Duluth for 13 years where she was a nurse's aide at St. Luke's Hospital. After retirement, she lived in Floodwood for 12 years and then moved to Grand Rapids where she lived for the past 11 years. Tyne was active in the Wawina community, serving on the town board. She was also a member of the Women's Activities Club. Tyne was preceded in death by her husband, Glen in 1981; three sisters, Jennie Jarvela, Lydia Karkiainen and Hilma Loff; three brothers, Jacob, August and John Hakala; two great grandchildren, Mary and Grant Heikkinen. She is survived by her son, Duane (Peggy) of Wawina; daughter, Phyllis (Joe) Bean of Texas; four grandchildren, Cathy (Michael) Walden, Cindy Bean, Jeff (Amy) Heikkinen, Jody (Mike) Maloney; and 5 great grandchildren, Nathan, Nicholas, Kellie, Mikey and Kevin. A memorial service was held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 13, 2002 in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St. in Cloquet. Inurnment will be in the Wawina Cemetery.
