Obituary of Arnold Leonard Korhonen

Arnold Leonard Korhonen, 75, Floodwood, died Monday, May 12, 2003 in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born September 19, 1927 in Swan River, the son of Oscar and Sima Korhonen. He attended grade school in Swan River and earned his GED in the early 1970's. Arnold served in the US Army during WWII in the Japanese Theater and later served in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He farmed and logged both before and after his military duty. After WWII, he owned and operated his own logging company. Arnold also spent five years in Greenland constructing airfields and worked on the construction of the Panama Canal for two years. He married Bernice Hill on October 13, 1956 in Duluth, MN. He was a 49er Operating Engineer for 35 years out of Duluth. In his retirement, he worked part time in logging with his son, Arnold Jr., and later worked for the Schuett Corp. in maintenance at the Riverview Manor in Floodwood. Arnold's first love and joy was his family. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bowling. He was an avid Vikings fan and enjoyed watching the Twins. He was a member of the Assemblies of God Church in Floodwood. Arnold will be sadly missed by his family, friends and church family. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ernest and Eddie Korhonen. Arnold is survived by his beloved wife, Bernice of Floodwood; his son, Arnold Korhonen, Jr. of Floodwood; three daughters, Robin Korhonen and Pattie (Bob) Fjeld, both of Floodwood; and Laurie Korhonen of Bloomington, MN; a special daughter, Linda Salonek of Bloomington; granddaughter, Beth Ann Korhonen of Chisholm; grandson, Dylan Fjeld of Floodwood; sister, Aileen Landies of Yelm, Washington. Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 15, 2003 in the Assemblies of God Church in Floodwood. Military honors were accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. Interment was in Sago Cemetery in Swan River. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street in Cloquet.
