Obituary of Vienna Laila Mattinen

Vienna "Vi" Laila Mattinen, 87, Cloquet, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003 in Cloquet Community Memorial Nursing Home. She was born June 9, 1915 in Brevator Township, the daughter of Kalle and Katri (Oinen) Oinonen. She attended Saimon School. As a young woman, Vi started working as a housekeeper and babysitter. While working at a local establishment, her boss introduced her to a young man he thought would be good for her. She and Charlie Mattinen eloped on May 15, 1940. Vi worked at Raiter Pharmacy for several years, then as a mom and homemaker. She worked two years at Gillette Supper Club and then for 13 years at Cloquet Coop Hardware retiring in 1977. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ladies of Kalevala and a charter member of the Cloquet Hospital Auxiliary. Vi enjoyed fishing and sewing and had her own small business at home sewing slipcovers for furniture. Vi is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Victor and Henry Oinonen and a sister, Esther Ulvi. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Charles, of Cloquet; two daughters, Kathryn (Emmett) Anderson and Marion Mattinen, both of Cloquet; two grandsons, Robert (Karen) Anderson of Prague, Czech Republic and Dave Anderson of New York City; three great grandsons, Bennett, Evan and Parker Anderson of Prague, Czech Republic, two special nieces, Laura (Randy)Yrjanson and Shirley Johnson, both of Cloquet and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 31, 2003 in Northland Funeral Home. Interment was in in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cloquet. If preferred, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
