Obituary of Toivo William Hill

Toivo William Hill, 95, Esko, died Thursday, August 7, 2003 in Inter-Faith Care Center, Carlton. He was born December 18, 1907 in Cloquet, the son of Andrew and Mary (Markkula) Hill. He married Vieno Oak on June 7, 1930 in Cloquet. He was a pasteurizer for Arrowhead Creamery from 1923 - 1930. He then was the manager of Sanitary Dairy in Marquette, MI until 1936 and the plant manager for Cass Clay Creamery in Moorhead until 1940. From 1940 - 1943, he was employed by Diamond Caulk in Duluth. Toivo was a heavy mortar crewman for the Army Combat Infantry during WWII and was a Purple Heart recipient. Toivo was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Cloquet and of the Senior Bible Group. He was also a member of Esko Senior Citizens, the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 of Carlton, Disabled American Veterans, Carlton American Legion and the Military Order of Purple Heart. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Eino, Waino, Sulo and John Hill and a sister, Viena Wilson. Toivo is survived by his wife of 73 years, Vieno, of Cloquet; six nephews, Robert Hill, James Hill, Norman Hill, Don Siiter, Michael Hill and Joe Richey and two nieces, Mary House and Kaye Koerth. Funeral services were held Monday, August 11, 2003 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Interment was in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet.
