Obituary of Alvin Martin Landro

Alvin Martin Landro, 90, Cloquet, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 7, 2003 in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. He was born August 9, 1912 in Cloquet, the son of Mons and Marie (Ericksen) Landro. Alvin was a 1931 graduate of Cloquet High School. He married Evelyn Weckert in 1940 and she preceded him in death in August of 1987. Alvin began working as an electrician for Northwest Paper in 1933 and retired from Potlatch Corp. in 1976 after 43 years of service. He was a WWII Army Infantry Veteran serving from 1944 - 1946. Alvin was the owner of the former Landro TV Service in Cloquet and had his own photography business operated from of his home. Norwegian music was a very large part of his life as he was very musically gifted and enjoyed playing the organ, singing and dancing. He was a member of the Hardanger Fiddle Club, a founding member of the Bunion Busters Dance of Club in Cloquet and sang in the Fun Chorus of Englewood, FL. He was also a member of the Sons of Norway, the Cloquet Moose Lodge #1274, Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 and Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262, and the Cloquet Eagles Club. Alvin enjoyed traveling, spending the winters in Florida and the summers at his cabin on Leech Lake. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn; two sisters, Solvieg Hattinen and Martha Gustafson; two brothers, Trygve and Sigvald and a nephew, Arnie Ericksen. Alvin was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew him, including his wife Rachel (Hovis) whom he married on April 30, 1988 in Cloquet; his step-children, Linda (James) Bassett of Cloquet, Roger (Judy) Hovis of Zimmerman, MN, Les (Judy) Hovis and Rita Lowe, both of Cloquet; 11 step grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Betty Landro, Rose Pressley, Violet Wilson and Pat (Don) Johnson, all of Cloquet; his special nieces and nephews Andrea, Anne Marie, Carol, James, Kathy, Lannie, Linda, Lynn, Michelle, Sandra, Susan and Randy; special friends Jim and Laura Waters of Englewood, FL, many friends both here and in Florida and his family in Norway. A memorial service was held Thursday, June 12, 2003 in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet. Inurnment was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cloquet. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
