Obituary of Leonard R. Polla

Leonard R. Polla, 77, Floodwood, died Thursday, September 6, 2001 in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born and raised in Elmer Township and graduated from Toivola High School. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He attended Brown Institute in Minneapolis and in 1948 he married Bernice Leinonen in Duluth. He worked for twelve years for various railroads as an agent-telegrapher. He moved to Floodwood in 1949. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years and retired in 1984 as Postmaster of the Floodwood Post Office. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church of Floodwood, the National Association of Postmasters, National League of Postmasters, the American Legion Post 262 of Cloquet, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8299, the Floodwood Senior Citizens, a retired 20 year member of the Floodwood Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Floodwood Lions Club. He is preceded in death by his parents, Erick and Hanna (Koski) Polla; several sisters and a brother. Leonard is survived by his wife, Bernice, of Floodwood; two sons, Gene (Janice) of Hoyt Lakes and Dr. Dennis (Jolene) of Roseville, MN; one sister, Ina Maki of Hibbing; four grandsons and one great granddaughter. Visitation was held on Sunday, September 9, 2001 from 2:00 until the 3:00 P.M. funeral service in Hope Lutheran Church, Floodwood. Interment in Hope Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet.
