Obituary of Donald Irving Sandberg

Donald Irving Sandberg, 78 of Barnum, died Friday, January 17, 2003 in his home. He was born December 2, 1924 in Minneapolis to Einar and Clara (Thompsen) Sandberg. Don attended St. Paul Hancock Grade School and graduated from Wilson High School in 1943. He went on to graduate from Hamline University in 1948, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies and History. He served in the U.S. Army for a short time. Don was married to Betty Bronson on June 11, 1946 in St. Paul. He was a teacher for 37 years in South St. Paul Junior High retiring in 1988. In addition to teaching, Don was a breeder and exhibitor of German Shorthaired Pointers since 1952. He was a judge of sporting Hound and Terriers for 30 years. He traveled all over the United States, Australia, Mexico, Venezuela and Canada judging. After his retirement from teaching in 1988, Don and his wife, Betty moved to and made their home in Barnum. Don was a member of Barnum United Methodist Church, the Duluth Kennel Club, Minneapolis Kennel Club, was an honorary life member of both the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Minnesota and the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America where he was also a member of the Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Hanging Horn Lakeshore Management Association and the Barnum Area Community Club. He enjoyed cruising on his pontoon and fishing on Big Hanging Horn Lake. Don was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Mark and Eric and a brother, Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty; sons, Peter (Leslie) of Northfield and Scott (Carol) of Orono; granddaughters Emma of Massachusetts, Laurel of St. Paul and Erica who is with the National Guard in South Carolina; grandsons, Anders of Edina, Kent and Skipp both of Northfield, his nephew, Bill Sandberg of St. Paul and numerous cousins. Memorial services were held on Monday, January 20, 2003 in the Barnum United Methodist Church with Pastor Lee Kantonen officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Barnum United Methodist Church Building Fund, 3762 Front St., Barnu, MN 55707. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.
