One year and eight months, the time we provided care for Bud, is not a long time when considering the total 78 years of a man's life. I can't exactly say why. Maybe his innocence and honesty drew you in. Maybe it was his true neediness and dependency at that point. He was very easy to become attached to and love. He continued to be so expressive and genuine although he couldn't clearly express himself. His funny words and expressions held meaning right up to the end. He always maintained a gentleness and kindness about him no matter how confused and frustrated he became with his illness. He took some patience, but was sincerely a joy to behold. I can not say what kind of father or husband he was earlier in life, but when he lived with us, he was always a shinning bright spot in our daily routine. He was a real character, gentleman and "buddy" right up to his final day. It was a privilege to know him. We will miss him.

My favorite memories of Grandpa took place in his workshop. He loved to build things out of wood and always amazed me with the products he produced. I have a hope chest that he built for me many years ago that I will cherish forever.
