Obituary of Henry A. E. Johansen

Rev. Henry A.E. Johansen "Elgin", 90 of Carlton passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 in Augustana Care Center in Moose Lake. He was born August 12, 1930 in Lake Norden, South Dakota to Henry and Jemina Johansen. He grew up in the Kettle River area where he enjoyed fishing and swimming in the river near his home. He attended Kalevala Grade School and graduated from Barnum High School in 1948. Henry worked in the trucking industry as a diesel mechanic and driver for several years and worked a short time at Conwed. He was a member of the Army National Guard serving with the Headquarters Battery 257 AAA Gun Bn from 1949 until 1959. He attended wheel vehicle school at Fort Benning, GA, and excelled in Diesel. He married Doris Forse on October 12, 1952. God led Henry to the Christian Ministry. After a short time at Bible School he entered the seminary, graduating with a Theology Degree. He was ordained in the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations. Henry was fluent in the Finnish language and served Good Shepherd Lutheran in Virginia, MN for many years, a Finnish and English congregation. He was called to Zion Lutheran in Willmar and served many years. He was a current member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Henry enjoyed studying and reading. He attended Billy Graham School of Evangelism and Leadership Clinic at St. Paul Bible College. He took every advantage to attend schools available to him. Henry enjoyed the outdoors immensely through hunting, fishing, camping, going to the Boundary Waters with family and church youth groups. He loved to expose others to God's great creation. Henry was preceded in death by an infant sister, Ruth Johansen. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his wife, Doris; four children and their families; and one sister, Mary (Harald) Rettig of Switzerland. Private family services will be held. Burial will be in Sandy Lake Cemetery, Carlton. A video recording of the service will be on the funeral home website Monday afternoon.
