I am sad to learn of Lloyd's passing but I'm happy for the many years he was able to live into retirement and for his long life. I carried mail along side Lloyd for his final 11 years at the Cloquet Post Office, many of those years as his relief carrier. Knowing well the route he carried, as well as all the other routes in town, Lloyd's was by far the most physically challenging and he stayed on it to the day he retired. His stamina always amazed me as being 20 years his junior and I was always tired after carrying his route. Being a fellow Suomalainen, he was the embodiment of sisu. I have never met a more hard working, good natured and decent man than Lloyd was.
I haven't seen Lloyd for a number of years now and hope he was as healthy through retirement as he always seemed to be while working at the Post Office. He never seemed to get sick while I would pick up every bug that was being passed around every winter. He had a remarkable immune system! Whenever I would cross paths with Lloyd after his retirement he would always greet me with the biggest smile and friendly demeanor. I truly miss our encounters and think of him frequently. I know how he cherished his family immensely.
I could share many memories of working with Lloyd but one sticks out to me. His route required him to be out in the elements almost the entire day save for lunch and coffee breaks. On the coldest day I ever carried mail in with a reported windchill of -99⁰F, I ran across Lloyd on his route on my way home after finishing my work for the day. My car was fairly warm and I stopped and asked how he was holding up and asked if he wanted to jump in the car for a few minutes to warm up a bit and he just smiled and politely declined. He had to have been cold to the bone but he just carried on like a trooper. That was sisu at its finest! He was one of my favorite co-workers and he did his job as well as any carrier I ever served with.
My sincere condolences to Lloyd's family during this difficult time. I know he loved you all dearly and I expect he will be missed greatly. Peace by with you all and rest in peace, Lloyd.

Uncle Lloyd and Aunt Rose were my Godparents, and was the way I'd always think of them, parenting-in-the-wings, so to speak. I loved listening to Lloyd's stories, the way he looked at the world. He was tremendously kind, friendly and welcoming everytime being with him. Being the closest 'neighbor' sibling, though a step-brother, my mom never phrased it that way, her brother would lend a hand or encouragement or friendship, time and time again over the years, especially in recent years with my Dad being alone. The last time he and Lloyd visited (the photo here) was so touching as a couple ole Finnlanders wish each other God's peace. I'll never forget Lloyd's chuckle-laugh or the gleam in his eye. Rest in peace Godfather, we'll see you soon.
